HISTORICAL NOTE

The adjoining former Dyffryn Mill was rebuilt in the 1920’s with Llwynbedw being one of the first factories in the district and John Lewis was carding, spinning and weaving in the Mill in the 1830’s. The Dyffryn Mill in the 1870’s employed 23 people and the owner was the pioneer of textile production in the district for he was the first to produce textiles from the preparation of yarn to weaving under the same roof. He had shops to sell his cloth as far away as Middlesborough. The adjoining Dyffryn Mill closed in the 1980’s.

Llwynbedw was a Weaving factory employing 3 Weavers in the 1870’s. The then owner John Lewis ran in addition a 60 Acre farm. A mule of 120 spindles was incorporated into the building in the 1860’s. Applicants will be interested to note that the village of Drefach-Felindre which was regarded as a scene of great industrial activity was once known as ‘The Huddersfield of Wales’. The National Woollen Museum a branch of the National Museums and Galleries of Wales sets out to trace the history of the most widespread of Welsh Industries in this most important region. Ever since 1947 the Woollen Industry of West Wales declined.

Drefach-Felindre became an important textile village and a domestic and factory industry flourished tremendously during the late 19th Century and by 1900 the Teifi valley was by far the most important textile manufacturing region in the Principality with undoubtedly one of the main contributing factors to the development of the Woollen Industry in West Wales being the availability of water to drive machinery and to be used in scouring and washing wool fabrics. In addition the textile villages were in close proximity to the sheep farms of the lower hill slopes of West Wales thus providing a plentiful supply of raw material within the region.
