HISTORICAL NOTE

The property reputedly has connections with Oliver Cromwell whose actions lead to the property now being known as Knightsford as a result of the Knight or Baron of Trawsmawr being killed next to the property by Cromwell’s soldiers this act of violence was to be forever remembered by the change of the name of the property from Glanrhyd to Knightsford.

In May of 1648 Cromwell was at Cwrt Castell but did not disturb the neighbourhood because he had relatives living there. Oliver Cromwell it is reported had it in mind to demolish Pembroke Castle and the route he intended to take was through Cynwyl Elfed and Newcastle Emlyn. When he reached Llannewydd (Newchurch) he met with an Army of Tenant Farmers under the command of the Knight or Baron of Trawsmawr and this journey was frustrated. A pre-arranged scheme to capture Cromwell had been made by the Squires of Trawsmawr, Pantycendy and Plas Howell. The intention of these Squires had been to decoy Cromwell over Cefn Cilgwyn to the intricate valley of Nantgwyn under Pantycendy where they thought his Army could never escape. In their flight from Penymaes pursued by Cromwell right by Rhydymarchog the Knight or Baron of Trawsmawr was killed and commemoration of that tragedy as previously mentioned the property that was once called Glanrhyd was changed to Knightsford.

In 1844 the Landowner was a Louisa Bowes Morgan but it is the occupier who is the most famous by far namely Thomas Rees. Although he resided at the Homestead known as Rhydymarchog along with his brothers, who he was and what he represented, embroiled and immersed Knightsford into the most violent history of the time namely the ‘Rebecca Riots’ with Knightsford at its very epicentre.
