Eric Firth and Son are a well known and respected local family run Building Company who specialise in the restoration and conversion of period property with attention to detail of paramount importance and to this end have been recipients of numerous local Civic Awards.
‘Ystrad Mansion’ is located at the foot of the hill called ‘Allt y Cnap’ and records show that there has been a dwelling house on the present site since 1580 and the house was re-built between 1800 and 1810 by John Jones who incidentally gave his name to the local village of ‘John’s town’.
The residence at the beginning of the 19th Century would have provided a comfortable Country seat/Gentleman’s Residence and briefly comprised according to sale catalogues of the time which describe the house as having a suite of reception rooms including a Library, Drawing Room, Dining room, Study and Reception Hall, with nine bedrooms and dressing rooms, ‘excellent’ bathroom and lavatory. The Teak Billiard Room was of ‘beautiful’ modern design with perfect ‘lavatory arrangements’. In addition there were Servants, House keeper and Butlers rooms, kitchens, china and glass closets and a Brew house, ample Cellarage, a high walled garden and ‘Hot house’, Stable block and ancillary buildings with the residence being at the centre of an estate covering some 1,000 acres of land.
The property fell into disrepair in the 1970’s/80’s and Messrs Eric Firth and Son subsequently bought what remained of the original property in the late 1980’s and commenced a sympathetic redevelopment of the former Mansion and grounds.
